Kanza Museum

Celebrating the Journey of The Wind People

Current Exhibitions

The Kanza Museum’s current exhibition invites visitors to explore the history, culture, and resilience of the Kanza (Kaw) people from ancestral origins to the present day. Through historical photographs, archival materials, maps, cultural objects, and interpretive displays, visitors will encounter the Kanza story as it unfolded across the Plains and through periods of profound change. The exhibition examines traditional lifeways, village communities, diplomacy, treaty-making, removal, allotment, and the experiences of Kanza citizens who helped guide the Nation through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The exhibition also highlights the enduring presence of the Kaw Nation today through language preservation, cultural revitalization, historic preservation, and efforts to strengthen and sustain Kanza culture for future generations. By bringing together historical and contemporary perspectives, the exhibit offers visitors a deeper understanding of the Kanza people’s continuing relationship to community, culture, and homeland. We invite you to discover the story of a people whose history extends far beyond the pages of the past and continues to shape the future of the Kaw Nation.

Honoring our Past

This season’s exhibition is designed as an interactive experience that combines physical displays with audio storytelling. Visitors will encounter five sections throughout the exhibit, each featuring a QR code that links to an audio track. Together, these audio narratives guide visitors through the Kanza story and are intended to be experienced alongside the exhibition displays.

To fully enjoy the exhibit, visitors are encouraged to bring a smartphone or tablet capable of scanning QR codes, along with personal headphones or earbuds. For those who do not have headphones, a limited number are available to borrow from the museum.

In addition to the audio experience, visitors will have opportunities to engage directly with exhibit materials through interactive elements, including pull-out drawers, historical documents, treaty reproductions, photographs, and a clan book available for viewing.

The full exhibit experience takes approximately 45 minutes to complete. Upon arrival, visitors should first check in at the Kaw Nation Administration Building before proceeding to the museum.

We look forward to welcoming you and hope you enjoy this unique and immersive exploration of Kanza history and culture.
