The General Council is one of the legislative
bodies of the Kaw Nation. It is made up of all enrolled mentally competent
tribal members over the age of 18. The General Council meets on a quarterly
basis at the community building at Washunga. Below you will find a list of

When is the next General Council Meeting?
The remaining 2011 General Council Meetings are scheduled for April 10th, July 10th and Octber 9th, 2011. The constitution requires these meetings to be held the second Sunday of each quarter (unless rescheduled.) It is best to check with the office prior to the meeting to make sure it has not been rescheduled.
What constitutes a quorum at the General Council?
A quorum of the General Council shall consist of twenty five (25) citizens of the Nation.
Can a special meeting of the General Council be called?
Special meetings of the General Council may be held upon the call of the Chairman, at his discretion, or at the written request of a majority of the Executive Council, or of fifty-five (55) members of the General Council.
What type of Notice is given that a regular General Council Meeting is going to take place?
The time, date, place and purpose of a General Council meeting is published in the Ponca City News, posted on our website and mailed to all tribal members.
How are the meetings conducted?
All meetings shall be conducted in accordance with Roberts Rules of Order.
What are the powers of the General Council?
The General Council has no powers to act on their own. Their duties are to confirm the actions of the Executive Council on issues involving the following: The sale, mortgage, or lease of tribally owned land, tribal elections (and election law), recall or removal of a tribal official, eminent domain, the appointment of certain judicial officials, and pay increases for constitutional tribal officers.
How long do the General Council Meeting last?
The meetings for the General Council start at 10:00 a.m. and usually run one, to one and a half hours. Once the business part of the meeting is concluded, the tribe provides lunch to those in attendance.
